JD - CH.9 - Ambivalence and conflict behavior Flashcards
How would you interpret a yawn bathtime?
Not bored, likely displacement. Response conflict: Flee, fight, give up/allow?
How could a conflict involving low stress maniest in behavior? Give ex.
Can manifest as behavior with no relevance/relation to context. When slightly worried and yawn. Often self-directed (groom, rub, scratch).
Make an interpretation of a cat failing to grab a bird that choses to groom itself.
Often seen as embarrassed, try act casual. Is actually probably displacement. A bit stressed.
How can we reduce low stress of solving problems for animals?
Chimps reduced amount of displacement behavior when received positive feedback during problem solving (conditioned reinforcer). Reduced stress of solving problem.
WHta other explanation could there be to the yawn at bath time?
Yawn bathtime calming signal? Communicate to other , like appeasement gestures. Inhibit aggression in other. Difficult to say if it could be calming or displacement.
Which other reaction could an animal show in response to stress?
Redirected behavior: Action fits context, but alternative target. Want to attack, but prevented by leash. Might bite leash or handler. Two dogs aggressing on passer by, might attack each other.
What is the difference between displaced and redirected behavior?
Displacement = Right target, wrong time. Redirected = Right time, wrong target.
Which types og inner conflicts could a dog experience?
Approach- approach. Avoidance-avoidance. Approach- avoidance
What is an approach- approach conflict? What is the behavioral output typically?
2 equal goals beckon simultaneously. Ex. Owner without treat, other with treat. Called by owner. Barks. Approach-approach conflict or pure thwarting?
What is an avoidance-avoidance (dilemma) conflict? What is the behavioral output typically?
Choice rotten options. Fearful dog ordered to stay in order to be patted. Corrected if breaks - Patted if stays (scared). Can reak havoc within.
What is an approach- avoidance conflict? What is the behavioral output typically?
Same stimulus/goal attracts+repels. Stretch investigation. Approach - Withdraw. Barking - Whining. Common to see displacement behaviors.
What are external conflicts?
Constraints imposed by external environment conflict with motivation. Called thwarting.
Ex. Leg caught, want to escape. Barrier frustration common ex.
Name: Lorenz Term: FAP. Explain connection and what it is.
Lorenz: Action specific energy = Force in animal, accumulates over time. Build up play-energy, chase-energy, bark-energy. When enough build up + Trigger = FAP release. Energy could overflow if built up for more than one action + triggers for 2 opposing behaviors: Energy overflow, displacement behavior could be released. 2 drives kick in simultaneously.
What is vacuum behavior?
Vacuum behavior = Appearance of FAP without characteristic trigger are result of overflowing specific reservoir.
