A

How do dogs know that another dog is playing?

A

Behavior have key modifications (Attenuated force/self-handicaping, roles frequently reversed) + Metacommunication.

What types of behavior is used in play?

A

Borrows behavior from goal directed activities: Fight, chase, flee, courtship. Incl. biting, body slamming, wrestling with teeth displayed etc

A

Role reversal can diminish with dogs that play together extremely frequently. Ok if both still consent.

What is meta communication in dogs?

A

Qualifies behaviors that come before/after: Play bows, play face, exaggerated movement (bouncy, unnecessary jumps to side).

A

Break off before heating up. Abrupt their play when fail to heed signals from other dog.

A

Costs time, energy, injury risk + more detectable to predators.

What is the prevailing theory why dogs play?

A

Rehearsal theory. But incorrect? Doing modified version of behavior = Bad rehearsal? Also shown not critical for function of the behaviors. Don’t know yet.
