When is considered neonatal period with dogs?
0-14d:
What features characterizes the neonatal period?
Well developed sucking reflex. Can crawl, distress vocalize, respond to tactile stimuli, right themselves if tumble onto backs. Can’t obtain stable body temp or eliminate solo. Spread out if warm, huddle together if cold.
What period follows the neonatal period?
Transitional period until eyes + ears open, usually around 21d.
What features characterizes the transitional period?
Can stand, take faltering steps. Learn through reinforcement. Access to mom, milk.
What period follows the transitional period? How long does it last?
Socialization period. Ends 11-18 weeks, depending on who you ask.
What features characterizes the socialization period?
Forming catalog of objects for social bonding. Put things into safe/unsafe categories. What to keep at distance and what to get close to.
When should socialization start?
Evidence for socialization start-up is better the earlier it’s started. Don’t know exactly when window opens and closes.
WHat variables in general form our dogs behavior?
Dunbar: “The owner variable is enormous!”. The day to day little things. Different people react to behavior differently. Genetics and early trauma big factors.
