JD - CH.13 - Puritanism and reward training Flashcards
What is a puritanisms view on dogs connection to humans?
Want dog to love-me-for-me (for the good reasons), not for food. Should not be obedient, patient, polite due to reward history?
Is it fair to put the concept of puritanism on dogs?
Unfair? Strong ability in humans, not present in dog mind?
Which animal has been proved to have some sort of morality? Do dogs have morality?
Proto moral qualities (ex. fairness) been demonstrated in chimps. Dogs don’t have this (?) A least don’t have complex morality.
How should you rather think about dogs and their love to us?
Dogs are bonding animals: Will habituate/bond to people. Fearful dogs can get more scared when exposed to human (sensitization). Will still bond to owners who abuse (like humans), but with fear.
Why should you not hold out on rewards for desired behavior?
Holding out on reward also leads to motivation only for cheap behaviors in non-distracting environment. Dogs don’t waste behavioral dollar: No free lunch!
How does Susan friedman view behavior?
Behavior is tool to produce consequences.
A trainer who believes a dog function altruistically, which methods could they chose to use, without usually saying that they do?
Might resort to violence/ fear. But rarely SAY they prefer pain/fear as motivation. Rather imply/directly state that dog respect/perform for them or have good work ethic. Threaten/hurt under cloak that only real motivator is personal charm or crafting of some sort of dog super patriot.
Why should you continue to give rewards to your dog?
Being kind, respectful, generous and associating oneself with intrinsically good things does not cheapen or corrupt relationships!
