JD - CH.27 - Car whining Flashcards
Regarding constant whining in car on the way to training, what should be considered first as a cause?
Lifestyle and possible understimulation.
If the issue is not understimualtion, why does standard measures not work to remove the behavior?
This is not driven by reinforcers or punishers or visual stimuli outside car. Standard measures don’t work.
If it’s not understimuli, what is it that drives car whining?
Pavlovian conditioning
Why does standard measures not help a problem like car whining?
When in conflict, classical conditioning tends to prevail over OP conditioning.
In the example of a dog barking at the door: Give examples on operant mechanism behind it.
Bark at door, get sandwich - Behavior goes up. Get sandwich when not barking-behavior goes down.
In the example of a dog barking at the door: How else could it work than the example above?
But if behavior is salivating=problem! Bc anticipation of sandwich leads to salivating, involuntary.
Why has classical conditioning been successful in evolution?.
Ability to anticipate and prepare for events gave animals that were able to do so a benefit.
Give examples of typical classical conditioning in dogs.
Ex. Salivation good preparation for food.
Ex. Adrenalin spike usually benefit when about to fight or flight.
Ex. Emotional responses = The most relevant to dog people.
What mechanism is at play when a really fun exciting thing has a reliable enough tip off (like car ride to park)?
Conditioned emotional response (CER) can develop.
Which individuals are more likely to for CER’s?
High capacity, energetic dogs.
In the example of the car ride to the fun park: What is the cue?
Car is cue.
In the example of the car ride to the fun park: What is driving the car whining in the dog?
Not by consequence or scenery, but an involuntary expression of emotional anticipation of mind blowing fun coming after car ride.
In the example of the car ride to the fun park: Explain how the conditioning happened from the beginning?
First car was neutral, then became associated with fun park. Initially whining commenced at end of ride to park.
In the example of the car ride to the fun park: What very typical consequence of Pavlovian conditioning is illustrated here?
Bleeds backward in time to trip there.
In the example of the car ride to the fun park: What is the fix?
Need some boring uneventful car rides to avoid. Also load up can be tip off. Clothing, equipment routine should be changed. Lots of boring rides, don’t take turn to park, vary route. Find critical junctures that dog identifies and rear off to boring road. Use a cue before arriving at park/fun stuff, and say nothing for boring.
