Japan - 3 Flashcards
Describe a national scale response to Japan’s ageing population.
In June 2014, Prime Minister Abe announced a number of reforms aimed at increasing Japan’s economic growth. They were dubbed ‘Abenomics’. Some centred on tackling the nation’s shrinking population and declining workforce. Increasing the participation of women in the workforce was a particular focus. Whilst one aim was to create an additional 400,000 new childcare places by March 2018.
Evaluate the success of this response. (National)
Abenomics has been successful in empowering women in the workforce, and decreasing unemployment rates. According to Trading Economics (EC), unemployment in women dropped to 3.5% from 4.4% in 2011. According to EC, the overall unemployment rate has decreased from 3.7% in June 2014, to 3% in 2016 September.
However, Abenomics has been unsuccessful in other areas. According to EC, Japan’s GDP decreased by 473 billion USD from 2014 - 2015. Whilst funding for the creation of additional childcare places is lacking.
Abenomics has been unsuccessful in increasing Japan’s economy. Due to the lack of funding for the creation of new childcare facilities, the population issue has only been exacerbated by couples decreasing availability for children. Fertility rates have decreased by 0.01 from 2014 - 2016.

Robots have been under design and production in order to help aged care staffing shortages. Toyota has created a robot butler that is controlled via a tablet computer, and can be trained to fetch objects. A robotic body suit for stroke victims and a robot used to lift hospital patients are two devices on the market.
