List the factors that contribute to Japan’s low fertility rate.
The Japanese work ethic consists of long hours. Employers often expect employees to devote their own time to the company. This makes having children very difficult, thus most choose their job over making a family.
Child care is costly and in short supply. According to government estimations, 25,000 children are on a waiting list across the country.
The high cost of living, weak economy, and limited living space in Urban areas discourage larger families. Education fees for children are quite expensive.
The rising average age of marriage (29) has resulted in fewer reproductive years to have children. Marriage remains the only socially acceptable way to have children in Japan. 2% of children are born out of wedlock.
