Q

Give an example of the use of spatial technologies to assess Sumatra.

A

‘Global Forest Watch’ is an online forest monitoring system. It uses satellite imagery to map world forest cover, including Sumatra. Data obtained is in near real time, and uploaded consistently through the internet. Interactive, multi overlay maps are created, allowing for spatial associations to be identified between forest cover and other factors. Due to the GFW interactive maps, authorities are able to identify illegal logging quickly, compared to what may have taken up to months or even years to identify.

Q

State a global response to deforestation in Sumatra and evaluate it.

A

In 2000, the United Nations Forum on Forests UNFF was established. Through sustainable forest management and reforestation methods, it has aimed to reverse the loss of worldwide forest cover, improve the livelihoods of forest dependent people, and to also increase the financial assistance for country’s attempting sustainable forest management.

A 2005 review found that in order to be effective, the UNFF needs a legally binding, international agreement to protect forests. It also insisted that there needs to be greater financial support for LEDCs, which would allow them to implement sustainable forest management strategies.
