Jamaica’s development gap?

A

Over last 30 years, J has suffered high levels of debt, crime, poverty, and youth unemployment

To improve it’s economy, J gov launched Vision 2030 in 2016 - this scheme aims to make J ‘the place of choice, to live, work, do business, and rasie families’. Some of it’s stratergeis include:

  • Promoting tourism and investment in businesses and communities
  • Developing new markets for health and wellness, yatching and sports tourism
  • Creating more links between tourism and Industies such as manufacturing and agriculture

Positive effects of tourism?

A
  • Tourism accounts for around 15% of J’s GDP and over 50% of foreign invstment
  • there were around 300,000 jobs linked to tourism in 2016
  • Higher employment means that J’s have more money to spend, boosting economy
  • Sustainable enviornmental tourist attractions such as Blue Mountain National Park attract many visitors

Negative effects of tourism?

A
  • Some jobs may be temporary or seasonal leaving many unemployed when needs change
  • J’s ;location makes it vunerable to extreme weather events, such as hurricanes - diff to attract tourists in certain seasons
  • Construction of large hortels and resorts limits farmland for locals
  • This highest wages often go to managers from HICs, local susually low paid. Hotels and resorts owned by TNC’s earn most of profits
