- Cheap material is used like corrugated iron - waterproof ,noisy
- Poorly constructed - might collapse
- Very small properties - overcrowded - no privacy
- Electrical wires hook up to electricity illegally - dangerous - ppl can electrocute themselves , fires
- Access is up steep stairways - old ppl and young children

- built on hillside - susceptible to landslides
- Open sewers - health risk attract rats and insects which can spread diseases.

High crime rates - controlled by gangs
Challenges of living in Rocinha? Environment
- Shanty towns, usually built on outskirts of cities, often don’t have proper sanitation, electricity, or essential public services. These areas are often prone to fire due to high conc of homes + flammable materials
- Landslides - ppl and houses are easily washed away by heavy rain and mud
- Often very close to CBD’s

Not enough jobs, very poorly paid jobs, steady income not guaranteed
Challenges of living in Rocinha? Healthcare
- High infant mortality
- No hospitals - no running water or toilets, diseases like cholera
PEOPLE CAN’T AFFORD HEALTHCARE
Challenges of living in Rocinha? Housing?
- Demand for cheap housing led to development of overcrowded favelas with houses made from scrap materials (Plywood, corrugated metal, sheets of plastic), and lacking fresh water, sanitation and electricity
- Pop. density within Shanty towns is very high. Very poor infrastructure + inadequate transport communications
Challenges of living in Rocinha? Housing 2 - new arrivals?
New arrivals build houses out of basic materials (tarpaulin, corrugated sheets, broken bricks, on land which they neither own or rent
Challenges of living in Rocinha? Education
Few schools, diff to recruit teachers, laws not enforced for children to go to school
