Q

Name one dis advantage of this scheme

A

One disadvantage of this scheme is the loss of agricultural land.the reservoirs have flooded some land behind the dam and as a result farmers had to abandon their farmland and move to other areas.it was also very expensive to build the dams and the cost of pumping the water is high so it increases the cost of the agricultural produce.the scheme cost the federal government 3.6 billion to construct

Q

Two problems caused by acid rain

A

Acid rain washes out the nutrients of the soil. Trees become weak and vulnerable to defeat. Parts of the Black Forest in Germany have been wiped out because of this. Farmers have to purchase expensive fertilisers to put the nutrients back into the soil

Acid rain can damage stone buildings.the chemicals in the rain react badly with the minerals in the stone.the collusium in Rome and and the köln cathedral have been affected by this. This may affect tourism in the long run

Two reasons AGAINST incarnation

A

They can be seen as an easy way to get rid of rubbish and so more environmentally options like recycling are not being explored enough

People living in the surrounding area fear that the toxins(arsenic, lead, dioxins,Mercury)emitted from the incinerators are carcinogenic and poisonous

Q

Describe in detail one causes of overfishing

A

Modern technology-the improvement in sonar technology and radar equipment means fish are easier to locate and catch. In the past they used currachs to fish.they were very small boats,so they could not stay out to sea for long but now a days they have increased the size of trawlers meaning that they can stay out for sea for longer.there are also fridges on board so that they can preserve the fish.

Q

Explain three ways technology has been used to exploit bogs

A

In the past people used the bog to cut tire in order to heat their homes the turf was using a too, called a sléan.this was a very slow process and therefore the bog was exploited at a slow rate nowadays milled peat is used to generated electricity in power stations. Board na mona is responsible for this.it was set up in 1946 to exploit and harvest peat on and industrial scale and this meant that Ireland had its own energy source.
The killed peat was harvested using different type of machinery. This meant that the bog is being exploited at a much higher rate.a ditcher is used to dig drains to dry out the bog. A grader is used to level out the bog. a Miller harvests peat by scraping a thin layer of the bog. A Harrow is used to turn the loose peat on the surface to dry it and a ridger gathers the loose dried peat.
In the past a donkey and a cart was used to bring the turf from the bog to the houses but nowadays light railways have been built across the bog to bring the peat to power stations
In the past only people who lived nearby used the bogs. Today bord na mona run advertising campaigns to promote their peat products.these include moss peat for gardening and briquette and fire logs for home heating

Q

Describe in detail, two causes of overfishing

A

When Ireland joined the ECC in 1973 we gave up I the control of our waters.this meant that foreign trawlers could fish in our waters.this lead to more fish bieng caught

18
Q

Explain two solutions of overfishing (2)

A

The conservation zone. This can help becaus rod the strict quotas that had been set to help fish stocks recover.it is also illegal for any foreign trawlers to fish in this area in this area. It covers the are of 100000 km2of our coast of Ireland

Another way of stopping overfishing are quotas and seasons. Back then there was no closed fishing season to quotas so this meant fish could be caught all year round and there was no limit to what they could catch But nowadays fishing quotas and seasons have been set so this means that people can only fish at a certain time of the ear and they can only catch a certain amount.it is also illegal to catch any endangered fish ex.cod, haddock

19
Q

Why did app,e come to cork l

A

Being close to UCC and CIT ,Evans that there is a constant supply of skilled, educated people

As an English speaking country this suits the company with its HQ in America

Cork city and other large towns close by ex.Brandon,Cobb and Middleton provide the workforce.workers do not have far to travel

20
Q

Why did Apple move to cork t

21
Q

3 reasons why tourism has grown over the years

A

By law, people on Ireland and other developed country’s get paid time off work or holiday pay, this encourages them to take holidays either at home or abroad.it also makes holidays affordable for people

The package holiday has made booking holidays easy and more affordable.it is now possible to book flights and accommodation together wich takes out some stress out of organising a holiday

The Internet allows people to research different destinations

22

A

Free secondary education-before the 1960s everybody had to pay to go to school but afterwards everyone could go to school for free.this meant that both male and female could get an education

Women liberation movement-started in the us in the 1960.feminism led to change in status of women.this meant that they could do things they couldn’t before

The marriage bar-in 1932 when women got married they has to give up their job I’d she was working with the civil crevice eg.air lingus, teacher.the marrige bar was lifted in 1973 when island joined the ECC.this meant that women had a higher status and more worth

Gender equality laws-women were given that equal pay and status in the workplace.

Increase in cost of living-requires both parents to work in order to pay their mortgage and support their children

23
Q

Changing location of industry-British iron and steel

A

Forest- pWood was used the main energy resource.it was used for fuel in homes and small industries.as forests were cut down wood had to be carried and further to reach towns and this became very expensive.eventually the world ran out

Coal-coal was a better form of power.it provides x3 more energy.the mining industry peaked in 1913 when there were over 2500 coal mines in Britain .steel mills were know built beside the coal mines because coal is a bulky, heavy material and it was expensive and time consuming to transport.the availability for oil and North Sea gas reduced the comand for coal

Coast-locating a factory beside the coast is one more favourable so that goods can be exported as they were produced

24
Q

Write the process of water supply limrick

A

River Shannon-filtering (occurs in horizontal flow setting tanks using rapid gravity tanks)-add chemicals(chlorine:to kill remaining bacteria,Fluoride:to help prevent tooth decay)
