island biogeography Flashcards
species over area graph…. mainland vs. islands
islands will have a much steeper slope
- larger areas will start off with more species
factors that affect island species population
- area of island
- distance from mainland
Ecological disharmony island biogeography
- non-representative proportions of some species
- will only get species on the islands with good dispersal
- predators usually absent on small islands due to higher extinction rate from small population size (pred die out because little prey)
extinction and colonization
equilibrium between colonization and extinction
- some species never become extinct and others become extinct and recolonize repeatedly
as equilibrium is reached what happens to turnover rate?
- at equilibrium high turnover rate
- species composition changes and is continuous
what can you predict at equilibrium
- can predict numbers of species but not species composition
over time what happens to colonization rate
- successful colonization rate decreases
target effect: island biogeography
large islands have higher immigration rate than expected
rescue effect: island biogeography
near islands have higher immigration rate which rescues chances of extinction
tripartite theory
- more immigration with less isolation
- higher extinction with more isolation
- more immigration with more area
Endemism
low extinction rate and high isolation, low immigration = speciation
