A
relapsing functional bowel disorder associated with a change in bowel habit, no organic cause

what are the types of IBS and what do they mostly contain?

- IBS-C
- mostly constipation - IBS-D
- mostly diarrhoea - IBS- M
- mixed constipation + diarrhoea

what are the symptoms of IBS?
A
- abdominal pain and bloating
- relieved by defecation
- altered stool form/ frequency

describe the epidemiology of IBS
A
- females
- less than 40
- western world
- related to psychology
- stress, drugs and poor diet

how is IBS diagnosed?
A
- no tests just rule out other diseases
- coeliac, IBD, infections

2. faecal calciprotein

what would the bloods look like in IBS?
A
- FBC- anaemia
- ESR + CRP- inflammation
- coeliac serology

when would faecal calciprotein increase ?
A
increased in IBD

How is IBS treated?
A
- conservative
- patient education and reassurance
- more/less fibre, avoid caffeine - moderate
- ibs-c - laxatives
- ibs-d- antimotility drug - severe
- TCA + consider CBT/GI referral
