Iontophoresis Flashcards
What is Iontophoresis?
process by which ions are introduced into the body through the skin by means of continuous direct current E-stim
What are the indication for iontophoresis?
- pain, wounds, scar tissue, muscle spasms
- calcium deposits, fungal infection, plantar warts
- myositis ossificans, keloids, inflammation
What are the contraindications for iontophoresis?
- drug allergies
- skin reactions to certain ions
How often should the PT check on the patient when they are undergoing iontophoresis?
every 3-5 minutes to insure patient is not having any skin irritation or burns under the electrode
What may cause an acidic reaction with iontophoresis?
hydrochloric acid being built up under the positive electrode
What may cause an alkaline reaction with iontophoresis?
sodium hydroxide forming under the negative electrode
