Gait Training Flashcards
Which levels of weight bearing require an assistive device?
NWB
TTWB
PWB
WBAT (sometimes)
What is a two-point gait pattern?
pattern in which a patient uses two crutches or canes and ambulates moving the L crutch simultaneously with the RLE and vice versa, each step is one point on two steps makes one full cycle
What is a three-point gait pattern?
can be seen with walkers or crutches
one injured LE that may have decreased weight bearing is advanced followed by assistive device and finally the unaffected LE advances
What is a four point gait pattern?
using two crutches or canes the patient advances one crutch/cane then one LE, then the other assistive device and finally advances the other LE
What is a swing-to gait pattern?
a patient with weakness, paresis or paralysis uses crutches or walker and advances the LEs simultaneously only to the point of the assistive device
What is a swing-through gait pattern?
same as swing-to gait but patient advances LEs past the assistive device
Where should a therapist stand when guarding a patient who is ascending stairs?
How does this position changes when descending stairs?
when ascending be behind the patient and slightly towards the affected side in a staggered stance
when descending be in front of the patient but still be in a staggered stance for a good base of support
How should a patient ascend stairs when using a walker or crutches/cane?
How would they descend?
when ascending use a handrail and turn walker/crutches/cane sideways and use uninvolved leg to advance first while using both handrail and walker for support then advance involved leg and move the walker/crutches/cane
when descending use the same pattern but going down now
