Investigation panels Flashcards
What lab tests are included in a confusion screen?
FBC, CRP, U&Es Bone profile, B12 & folate, TFTs, glucose, LFTs and coagulation profile.
Why is a bone profile included in a confusion screen?
Hypercalcemia and hypocalcemia can also cause neurological symptoms, such as depression, memory loss, and irritability. Severe cases can cause confusion and coma
When a patient presents with confusion, what do you look for In the vital signs?
Hypotension and signs of sepsis
What lab tests are included in an anaemia screen?
FBC, U&Es, TFTS. B12 & folate, ferritin and serum iron as well as total iron binding capacity.
What lab tests are included in an sepsis screen?
FBC, CRP, Lactate, U&Es, blood culture. urine dip and any other culture like a wound swab.
What lab tests are included in an hypocalcemia screen?
U&Es, bone profile, ionised calcium, PTH level, vitamin D and LFTs
Why are LFTs included in a hypocalcemia screen?
To look at albumin, as albumin reduces it causes calcium to decrease as well, but this will not effect the ionised calcium levels.
what 3 lab tests and 1 other investigation is included in a refeeding syndrome screen?
U&Es, bone profile, magnesium and a ECG
What lab tests are included in an myeloma screen?
FBC, ESR, blood film, U&Es, Protein electrophoresis of blood and urine, Immunoglobulins.
why is rotein electrophoresis of blood and urine included in a myeloma screen?
Raised levels of Bence Jones protein are typical (appearing as a paraprotein band)
In a liver screen what 3 viruses should be screened?
Hepatitis serology (A/B/C)
Epstein-Barr Virus (EBV)
Cytomegalovirus
what two lab tests are specific for Wilsons disease in a liver screen?
Serum Copper and Ceruloplasmin
