Introduction to Fungi Flashcards
What is a fungus?
A chemo-organotrophic eukaryote that lacks chlorophyll and forms spores
Describe the cell walls of fungi
Polysaccharide cell wall, typically chitin or glucan
Describe the membranes of fungi
Contains ergosterol as the principle sterol
What is the classification of fungi mainly based on?
Morphology
What are the informal types of fungi?
Moulds, yeasts or mushrooms
What are the three formal types of fungi?
Basidiomycetes, Ascomycetes, Zygomycetes
Describe basidiomycete fungi
Hyphae stalk ends in basidium consisting of basidiospores connected to stalk by sterigmata
Describe zygomycete fungi
Rough walled zygote containing one of more zygospores
Describe Ascomycete fungi
Ascospores are contained within a sac (ascus)
What is a spore?
Small, typically single celled reproductive unit capable or giving rise to a whole new organism without sexual fusion
What is a dermatophyte?
A fungus that uses the skin protein keratin as a food source
Describe the most common dermatophytic infections and their nomenclature
Ring worm infections - Usually called tinea… (body location e.g. capitis, facei, barbae etc.)
