Chronic Inflammation 1 Flashcards
What is the definition of chronic inflammation?
Inflammation in which the cell population is particularly dense in lymphocytes, plasma cells and macrophages
What are the features of chronic inflammation?
Tissue damage, necrosis and dysfunction
What are the two healing outcomes of chronic inflammation?
Granulation tissue formation or scarring/fibrosis
What are the clinical presentations of chronic inflammation?
- Often no specific dolor
- Loss of function
- Malaise and weight loss
Chronic inflammation can result from what type of hypersensitivity?
Type V Hypersensitivity (Autoimmune disease)
What is autoimmune thyroiditis?
Functional gland destruction leading to hypothyroidism
What is leprosy?
Cutaneous nerve destruction leading to loss of sensation and necrosis
What is Chron’s Disease?
GI tract ulceration and fibrosis leading to pain, gut obstruction and diarrhoea
What are the aetiologies of chronic inflammation?
- Arising from acute inflammation
- Arising as a primary lesion
- Primary chronic inflammation
Chronic inflammation arises from acute when…
Large volume of damage results in an inability to remove debris (failure to resolve) leading to the presence of granulation tissue
Chronic inflammation arises as a primary pathology when…
Materials resistant to digestion is present such as mycobacterium and Brucella viruses or when exogenous substances are placed in the body such as metals and plastics
What are the cell and tissue components of chronic inflammation?
Lymphocytes, plasma cells, macrophages and fibroblasts make up cell components while granulation tissue and collagen make up tissue components
