Drug Delivery Systems Flashcards
What three factors determine the drug delivery system used?
The dose, the frequency of administration and the timing of administration
What factors must be considered about dosage?
- Recommended dose (BNF/BNFc)
- Impaired renal/hepatic function
- Age and weight
- Consider disease being treated
- Consider Toxicity
What is the most common drug delivery system?
Oral route
Why may a nano-gasrtric tube be needed in administering suspensions and solutions to patients with impaired swallowing?
Fluids which go down the trachea can result is aspiration pneumonia
What is a suspension?
Dispersions of coarse drug particles in a liquid phase (e.g. calpol)
What is enteric-coating formulation?
Delays digestion of the tablet until it reaches small intestine
What are some benefits of delayed/prolonged response drugs?
Maintains drug level within therapeutic range
Compliance is improved
What are some of the drawbacks of prolonged response drugs?
Different brands/manufacturers have different mechanisms and rate of release therefore once a patient has developed a base line response to the drug, they cannot change to another for fear of rapid acute toxicity
What is the most common example of buccal-sublingual drug?
GTN - for angina
Where is a pessary applied?
Vaginal route
