Introduction to dentistry Flashcards
What is the apical delta
supplies nerve and blood vessels
What is the enamel?
hardest tissue in mammalian body; outermost layer
What is cementum?
outer layer of the root
- acts functionally as periosteum of the root
- part of the periodontal support apparatus
what is dentin?
- main component of the tooth
- consists of multiple tubules & sensory nerve fibers
- similar hardness to bone but softer than enamel
continually produced by living, healthy tooth
What is the mucogingival junction?
where attached gingiva & oral mucosa meets
What us the gingival sulcus
- space between free gingiva & the tooth
- commonly traps debris
What are the components of the periodontal support apparatus/ perodontium?
- alveolar bone
- lamina dura
- periodontal ligament
- cementum
- gingiva
What is the lamina dura?
dense cortical bone forming the wall of the alveolus next to the teeth
What is the periodontal ligament?
connective tissue that fills the space between tooth and alveolar bone
What is the periodontal ligament composed of?
collagen, elastic fibers, blood vessels, nerves & lymphatics
Purpose of periodontal ligament
shock absorption, attachment of the teeth, supply of nutrients to alveolar bone & cementum
Deciduous teeth formula K9
2x (3/3, 1/1, 3/3, 0/0)
How many deciduous teeth do dogs have?
28
Dental formula for adult canine
2x (3/3, 1/1, 4/4, 2/3)
How many teeth does adult dog have?
42
Dental formula of kitten
2x (3/3, 1/1, 3/2, 0/0)
How many deciduous teeth does a kitten have?
26
Dental formula of adult cat
2x (3/3, 1/1, 3/2, 1/1)
How many teeth do adult cats have?
30
When does all permanant teeth comes in in dogs?
7 months
When do all the deciduous teeth grow in for dogs?
10 weeks
When do all deciduous teeth come in for kittens
6 weeks
When do all adult teeth come in for cats?
6 months
How are teeth numbered?
Triaden numbering system
How are deciduous teeth quadrants numbered?
500-800
what are some good dental questions to ask?
- current diet
- current home care
- illness/ medication
- previous anesthesia/ surgery
- orthodontic inplants
What does succor mnemonics check for
- survey & sense
- unfurl
- count
- counter/ colour
- occlusion
- reopen
- skull type
What is dolichocephalics prone to?
base narrow occlusion (ex. Doberman)
- decreased space in lower canine
What is mesocephalic prone to?
facial trauma, jaw, tooth fracture
What is brachycephalics prone to?
prognathism, missing teeth, teeth crowding, malalignment
What does the orastrip check for?
measures the thiol level produced by oral bacteria
- can indicate that periodontal disease is more severe even though teeth and gingiva appears normal
