Introduction to Brain and Behaviour Flashcards
What cells are present in the CNS?
Astrocytes, oligodendrocytes and microglial cells
What is the function of astrocytes?
Provide physical and nutritional support for neurones
What is the function of microglia?
Specialised macrophages important for phagocytosis in neurones
What is the function of oligodendrocytes?
To provide myelin in the CNS neurones
What is the function of Schwann cells?
To provide myelin for neurones of the PNS
What is the function of satellite cells?
Provide physical support to neurones in the peripheral nervous system
What does the grey matter consist of?
Neuronal cell bodies, dendrites, axon terminals, synapses and glial cells and is highly vascular
What does the white matter consist of?
Bundles of (mainly myelinated) axons and oligodendrocytes
