Intro. to the Nervous System, Anatomy and Embryology of the Eye Flashcards
What epithelium does the cornea consist of?
Stratified squamous non-keratinised
What are the five layers that make up the cornea?
Epithelium
Bowman’s Membrane (basement membrane)
Stroma (regularly arranged collagen - no blood vessels
Endothelium
How is the transparency of the cornea maintained?
Regular arrangement of collagen in stroma, no blood vessels and endothelium pump that keeps the aqueous humour out
Which layer of the retina contains the nerve fibres?
9th
Which layer of the retina contains the rods and cones?
2nd
Which layer of the retina contains pigment epithelial layer?
1st
Which structure provides blood supply to the outer layers of the retina?
Choroid
How do the inner layers of the retina receive blood supply?
Central retinal artery
Which part of the eye has maximum visual acuity?
Fovea centralis - packed with cones
How is the lens suspended?
From zonules from the ciliary body
What feature gives the lens its transparency?
Its avascularity
What are the functions of the tear film?
Keeps cornea moist, washes away particulate foreign bodies, has antibodies/lysozymes to kill microbes and smooths the outer surface of the cornea for refraction
What are the layers of the tear film?
Mucinous layer, aqueous layer and oily layer
How do the optic vesicles form?
They grow outwards from the diencephalic part of the neural tube towards the surface ectoderm
