What are the four weapon safety rules?
- Treat every weapon as if it were loaded.
- Never point a weapon at anything you do not intend to shoot.
- Keep your finger straight and off the trigger until you are ready to fire.
- Keep the weapon on safe until you intend to fire.
What is the fifth weapon safety rule?
- Know your target, and what lies beyond it and in-between.
What is a weapon’s condition?
Describes weapon’s readiness
What is Condition 1?
Safety on, magazine inserted, round in chamber, bolt forward, ejection port cover closed.
What is Condition 2?
Not applicable to the service rifle.
What is Condition 3?
Safety on, magazine inserted, chamber empty, bolt forward, ejection port cover closed.
What is Condition 4?
Safety on, magazine removed, chamber empty, bolt forward, ejection port cover closed.
What are the basic characteristics of M16A4 service rifle?
- “LMGAS” to remember that the service rifle is a Lightweight, Magazine-fed, Gas-operated, Air-cooled, Shoulder-fired weapon.
- It fires a 5.56mm projectile
- It can be fired either in automatic three- round bursts or semi-automatic single shots

- Tactical

When is the Tactical Carry used?
- Carry the rifle at the tactical carry if no immediate threat is present.
- The tactical carry permits control of the rifle while moving, but allows quick engagement of the enemy.
When is the Alert Carry used?
- Carry the rifle at the alert if enemy contact is likely.
- The alert is also best for moving in close terrain (e.g., urban, jungle).
- You can engage the enemy faster from the alert than from the tactical carry.
- The alert is more tiring than the tactical carry and its use can be physically demanding
When is the Ready Carry used?
- Carry the rifle at the ready if contact with the enemy is imminent.
- The ready allows immediate target engagement, but it is very tiring to maintain over a long period of time.
What is a tactical reload?
- A tactical reload occurs when the magazine is replaced before it runs out of ammunition, there is a lull in the action, and when the weapon is in Condition 1.
What is a speed reload?
- A speed reload is required when the magazine in the weapon has been emptied and the bolt has locked to the rear. It is conducted as quickly as possible.
What are four indicators that you observe before clearing a weapon?
(1) Indicator: Bolt is Forward or the Ejection Port Cover is Closed
(2) Indicator: Visible obstruction
(3) Indicator: Bolt Locked to the Rear and the Ejection Port Cover is Open
(4) Indicator: Audible Pop, Reduced Recoil, or Black Smoke.
(5) Indicator: Brass is Stuck Above the Bolt.
