what is aetiology?
causes of a particular disease
what does idiopathic mean?
a disease we don’t know
what does iatrogenic mean?
disease caused by other treatment
what does neoplastic mean?
growths, cancerous or non cancerous
what is innate immunity?
1st line of defence, present from birth, non-specific, no memory
what is adaptive immunity?
specific recognition of foreign substances/antigens, occurs through functional receptors on b & t cells
what are the key organs of the immune system?
thymus, bone marrow, lymph nodes, spleen, appendix, peters patch
what is the function of the thymus?
T cells mature
what is the function of bone marrow?
produce WBC that become lymphocytes
what is the function of lymph nodes?
produce and store cells that fight infection and disease
what is the function of the spleen?
largest lymphatic organ, contains WBCs that fight infection, control amount of blood in body
what is the function of the appendix?
contain immune cells
what is the function of peters patch in the intestine?
immune surveillance
