Intro To Kinesiology And Biomechanics Flashcards
What is biomechanics?
The use of principles of engineering to model movement of a living system.
How are fluid mechanics used in biomechanics?
To talk about swimming and the cardiovascular system.
How are statics applicable to biomechanics?
Modeling things when still
How are kinematics relevant to biomechanics?
Modeling things when moving.
What kind of motion is rotation?
Angular
What is active motion? What is passive motion?
Active, is moving yourself (muscle activation). Passive, is motion caused by motion created by an outside source (a push or a pull).
What is osteokinematics?
Motion of the bone relative to a plane of motion.
How many degrees of freedom does the shoulder have?
3 angular DOF, 3 linear DOF = 6 DOF
What does translation motion arise from?
Active muscles, laxity
In closed chain movement what segment is fixed?
Distal
What is arthrokinematics?
Motions that occur between the joint surfaces, especially those that are convex/concave.
Give an example of a hinge joint.
Elbow
Give an example of a pivot joint.
Radius and Ulna @ Humerus.
Give an example of a ball and socket joint.
Femur to pelvis.
Define roll.
Multiple points along a rotating articular surface contact multiple points on the other articular surface.
Define Slide.
A single point on one articular surface contacts multiple points on another articular surface.
Define spin.
A single point on one articular surface rotates on a single point on another articular surface.
Why are most joints at least slightly curved?
- Allows for better fit.
- Increases surface are of contact.
- Assists in guiding of movement on smooth surfaces.
What is the closed packed joint position?
When you wind up a joint to where the ligaments become taut and the motion between joint surfaces becomes minimal.
What is loose packed joint position? Why is this clinically important?
The position where the joint is the most relaxed. Clinically important because when you injure a joint it will automatically go to this position because it’s the least amount of tension in the joint and creates space which you need for inflammation/healing.
