Intro To Cognition Flashcards
Cognition
Cognitive function, our thoughts and actions, is regulated by brain activity. Primarily concerned with understanding the processes that produce complex behaviours even though separate abilities are studies.
Basic research
Goal is to try and understand the world and its phenomena without a specific end-use of this knowledge. How something works. Why is this important?
Applied research
Research with the end-goal of developing a solution to a problem. How can I use this?
Phenomenon-based research
When an “effect” is discovered, and follow-up research examines the nature of the effect
Placebo effect
Fake treatments lead to improvements in people’s symptoms and functioning
Cognitive psychology
Study of behaviour to understand the mind (mental processing)
Neuroscience
Study of the brain and linking it to the mind. What part of the brain carry out functions we see behaviourally?
Computational modelling
Building and modelling the mind-brain connection. “If we really understand how something works; we should be able to build it.”
Emotional enhancement effect
Emotional stimuli are more easily attended to, remembered than neutral stimuli. E.g. Poorer memory for person’s face holding a gun vs. Holding a glass. Emotional content increase, processing increase, memory increase. Amygdala activity increase, enhanced memory.
