Intravenous Flashcards
Factors affects flow rate
Height of the infusion bottle
Size of the angiocath
The position of the forearm
The position and patency of tubing
Reasons of discontinue infusion
IV infusion is completed as per doctor’s prescription
Peripheral venous access no longer required
insertion site shows local complication
NS flush
use 0.9% Sodium Chloride
wipe access port
insert syringe to access port
removing angiocatheter
turn off the Iv infusion by clamping the IV tubing
remove the securing dressing
Considerations of IV therapy
3 checks 5 rights
The infusion bottle must be higher than access site
no air bubble
apply strict aseptic technique
ensure no kinking
Complication for IV ( local)
Thrombus : blood clot caused by trauma from catheter
discontinue the infusion / restart the IV / not to massage the site
Phlebitis : inflammation of vein caused by the trauma from catheter
discontinue the infusion / apply warm compress / restart IV
Infiltration: escape of fluid into subcataneous layer
check the site regularly / discontinue the IV / start new IV
Complication for IV ( systemic)
Sepsis : microorganism invade the bloodstream
assess the site daily / culture the drainage / restart IV with strict aseptic techniques
Fluid overload : A large volume infused into circulatory system
report s/s / slow the infusion / monitor vital signs
air embolus : air in the circulatory system
Place the patient on the left side in head down
/ report / monitor v/s
