Interviews Flashcards
Structured Interviews
What is it?
-Researcher uses pre-set questions given in order and every person asked same thing
ADVANTAGES:
-Can be done by non-professionals as requires less skill with fixed questions
-Easier/ faster to analyse answers as pre-determined
-Easily replicable as questions are standardised
-Collect quantitative data that can be statistically analysed
DISADVANTAGES:
-Same interviewer may behave differently towards different Ps
-Answers may be restricted by questions asked if too fixed
-Different questions interpreted differently by participants
Semi-Structured/ Unstructured Interviews
What is it?
(Semi-Structured) Mix of structured and semi-structured questions
(Unstructured) First few questions pre-set, then other questions depend on their answers
ADVANTAGES:
-Some pre determined answers so makes easier to analyse
-In depth qualitative data can be collected
-Information can be accessed that may not be revealed with only pre determined answers
DISADVANTAGES:
-Interviewer bias more common as may lead Ps when asking to develop responses
-Same interviewer may behave differently towards different Ps
-Interviewers can ask questions in different ways
-Requires more skill from interviewer which may be more time consuming to find someone/ train them
