Central Tendancy Flashcards

1
Q

Mean

A

ADVANTAGES:
-Representative of all values within set of data

DISADVANTAGES:
-Easily distorted by extreme values so less validity in results
-Cannot be used with nominal data

A

ADVANTAGES:
-Unaffected by extreme values
-Appropriate for ordinal data

DISADVANTAGES:
-Not representative of whole data set as just uses ‘middle’ values

Q

Mode

A

ADVANTAGES:
-Used for nominal data
-Unaffected by extreme values as uses most common value

DISADVANTAGES:
-Not a useful way of describing data when there are multiple modes

Q

What is central tendancy?

A

Central tendancy informs us about the middle values for a set of data by finding averages

They are a type of descriptive statistic, meaning we can’t draw any conclusions from the mean, median or mode
