Q

What are the weaknesses of interference?

A
  • it may be overcome by cues so it may not be the main explanation for forgetting
  • some people aren’t as affected by proactive interference as others therefore it may not be an explanation for forgetting as it can’t be applied to everyone
  • most experiments done in lab so artificail stimuli
  • isn’t common

Q

Describe the evidence that shows how interferenced can be overcome by cues.

A
  • Tulving and Psotka gave participants 5 lists of 24 words, organised into 6 caragories
  • for the first word list recall was about 70% but decreased as they were given more lists
  • this number increased to 70% again however when they recieved a cued recall test

Q

Explain why some people are less affected by proactive interference than others.

A
  • people with greater working memory are less suseptable to proactive interference
  • tested by giving participants 3 word lists for them to remember and participants with worse working memory remembered less of the second and third lists because they were more affected by proactve interference

Q

What are the strengths of interference.

A
  • used in real life (advertisement)
  • it’s supported by drug studies

Q

How do we know that interference can be applied to adverticement.

A

Danaher et all did an experiment where they found that recall of ad message was impaired when the participants were shown ads of competing brands. This shows the similarity effect and that the interfernce between the ads caused them to forget

Q

Explain how drug studies can be used to explain interference.

A
  • Goenen and Gilles gave participants a list of words
  • some participants were given a drug and others a placebo to take when learning the words or recalling them
  • they found that those who were given the drug while recalling the words increased recall
  • this is because the drug prevents new information from reaching the part of the brain that processes memory
  • this showed that by decreasing interference you can decrease forgetting (therefore intefrerence can explain forgetting)
