What is proactive interference?

A
  • when an older memory intereferes with a new one
  • example is when a teacher keeps calling a student by their old student’s name

A
  • when new memory interferes with an old one
  • example is when a teacher has too many new students so they can’t remember their old class’ name

Explain McGeoch and McDonald’s experiment on the effect of similarities.

A
  • participants had to learn 10 words until they got 100% accuracy and then they had to learn a new listr of words (retroactive interference)
  • 6 groups had to learn 3 types of lists (synonyms, non-sensicle syllables and 3 digit numbers)
  • they found that the mosts mistakes were made (due to interference) were made when the lists were slimiar
