Interactionist Approach Diathesis Stress Model Flashcards
What does the interactionist approach suggest?
Schz due to psychological biological and social factors.
Explain Meehl’s early model
-entirely genetic
-single schizo-gene increase sensitivity to stress
-no schizo-gene no amount of stress could make and individual develop schz
Explain the Modern explanation of Diaethesis.
-due to many genes which increases the vulnerability of individual to schizophrenia.
other factors than genes which cause diethasis such as psychological trauma
-child abuse which can effect brain development making an individual gain sensitivity to stress
Explain the modern explanation of stress.
-anything that can risk trigger of schz
-cannabis, interference in dopamine
How do you treat individuals who get schz according to the interactionist approach?
Drug therapy and CBT
What are the evaluations?
-Tiarni et al
-tarrier et al
-Individual Differences
Explain RTS by Tiarini et al.
-followed up 19,000 adopted children whos mothers had schz
-compared to a control group of children with no genetic risk
-observed the child rearing styles
-those brought up in families with conflict and low empathy dev shz if they had genetic vulnurabiltiy
-genetic vulnurability and family related stress
Explain the RTS by tarrier et al.
-315 patients randomly allocated to treatment conditions
-those given a combonation of therapies of medication and cbt had lower symptom levels
-compared to the CG of those who only had one medication
-use of both more effective
Explain the limitation of individual differences.
-Two individuals could have the same vulnurability and stress but only one dev schz
-likewise two individuals could have the same combonation of treatments but have diffrent recovery outcomes
-dont have a full understanding of diaethsis and stress
-more research needed in order to become credible.
