Integumentary: Wound Healing Flashcards
1
Q
Types of Tissue Union: Primary
A
- No major loss of connective tissue
- Wound is not contaminated
- Closure within 3-7 days
2
Q
Types of Tissue Union: Secondary
A
- Full thickness
- Little Epithelialization
- Chronic Wounds
- Pressure injuries
- Venous Ulcerations
3
Q
Types of Tissue Union: Tertiary
A
- Contaminated tissue
- Risk of infection
- Closure results in too much tension
- Closed within 5-7 days of initial injury
4
Q
Epidermal
A
- Heals through regeneration
- Requires a wound border free of necrotic tissue
- Typically heals without scarring
- If dermal tissue involved granulation occurs simultaneously.
- Moist wounds epithelialize faster than those left open to air.
5
Q
Dermal: Phase One: Homeostasis
A
- Vasoconstriction
- Fibrin plug formation
- Within 10-15 min
- Growth factors released
6
Q
Dermal: Phase Two: Inflammation
A
- 24-48 hours
- Normal signs of swelling
- Vasodilation
- Leukocytes and growth factors to the area
- Phagosytosis
- Neovascularization
- Immune cells important during this phase
7
Q
Dermis: Phase Three: Granulation/Proliferation/Fibroplastic Phase
A
- Angiogenisis
- Granulation Formation
- Wound Contraction
- Epithelization
- Myofibroblasts for wound contraction
- Fibroblasts for collagen, elastin, glycosaminoglycan production.
8
Q
Dermis: Phase Four: Maturation
A
- 2-4 weeks
- Collagen synthesis and alignment
- Normal scar formation
- Hypertrophic and Keloid scar formation
- Compression garments, silicone gels or sheets are used to reduce hypertrophic or keloid scarring.
