complete table for insulinoma
what are the tumours of the beta cells of the islets of langerhans called
insulinomas
what do insulinomas do
produce excessive amounts of insulin resulting in hypoglycaemia
what are 5 CNS signs of hypoglycaema
- lethargy
- incoordination
- unusual behaviour/mentation
- blindness
- unconciousness
what are 3 msk signs of hypoglycaemia
- weakness
- muscle twitches
- convulsions
- trembling
how do you diagnose an insulinoma
insulin to glucose ratio (low glucose to normal or high insulin), diagnostic imaging (CT) and biopsy
- demonstration of hypoglycaemia not enough as can be caused by other things
- insulin might not always be above ref range
which counter regulatory hormone does prednisolone most closely resemble and how does it lead to an increase in blood glucose
corticosteroid (specifically cortisol)
corticosteroids decrease insulin resistance and therefore promote glucose production in the liver leading to an increase in blood glucose
