Injury & risk Flashcards
What is a simple (closed) fracture
Bone breaks and the skin is not punctured
Bone is not displaced
What is a compound (open) fracture
Broken bone pertudes out of skin
Serious risk on infection
What is a greenstick fracture
Bone is partly broken (buckles)
What is a stress fracture?
From over use
Happens as a result of muscles becoming too fatigue
Often in lower leg
What is a dislocation
When the bone at the joint is forced out of its normal position
What is a strain
A twist, pull or tear of a tendon or muscle
What is a tennis elbow
Over use of elbow tendons on the outside of the elbow
What is a sprain
Damage to a ligament
Occur when streching too far past the normal range of a joint
What is a golfers elbow
Over use of elbow tendons on the indside of the elbow
What is an abrasion
It’s caused by friction on the skin against a rough surface
What is torn cartilage
When the cartilage tears from wear and tear from long term use
Cannot be prevented
What is a concussion
Mild head/brain injury
When the brain rattles in the skull
What is a PAR-Q
A questionnnaire used by doctors/coaches to see if someone is ready to take part in exercise
-Desinged for people who have health conditions and may not be able to take part in sports
What does a cool down do ?
Reduce heart rate
Reduce body temprature
Disperse lactic acid
Prevents DOMS (delayed, onset, muscle soreness)
What does a warm-up do
Reduce risk of injury
Improves performance
Helps prepare psychologically
What is meant by protective equipment/suitable clothing
Making sure that your clothes are appropriate for your sport
The necessary protective equipment is worn
What is meant by playing by the rules
Ensures that the game is fair
Makes it funner for participants
Makes the game safer
How can correct use of principles of training reduce risk ?
Reduces injury risk
