Inguinal Canal and Spermatic Cord Flashcards
What is the movement of the male testes during development?
start outside of the body, move inside to develop, must move back out of the body
What is the external link of the scrotum to the body?
spermatic cord
What must the external genitalia move through?
the inguinal canal
(inguinal rings)
What are the contents of the spermatic cord?
-ductus deferens
-testicular artery
-pampiniform plexus of veins (testicular vein)
-genitofemoral nerve (for cremaster muscle)
-autonomic nerves
-lymphatics
What are the contents of the inguinal canal?
-ductus deferens
-testicular artery
-pampiniform plexus of veins (testicular vein)
-genitofemoral nerve (for cremaster muscle)
-autonomic nerves
-lymphatics
Do females have a cremaster muscle?
no
What is the function of the gubernaculum?
ensure the gonads are moving in the proper direction
-shorten and steer the gonads forward
What is the inner most lining of the body wall?
parietal peritoneal
Where do the gonads originate in fetal development?
near the lumbar vertebrae in the posterior body wall
-near the kidney as well
What is the inguinal “hole” ?
the place where the gubernaculum attaches to the skin and where the gonads have to pass through
Do the gonads fit through in inguinal rings?
no.
-instead the layers of the abdominal wall must be extended through the rings
What does the transversalis fascia become after the gonads get to the inguinal rings?
external spermatic fascia
(internal is right I think)
What does the internal abdominal oblique muscle become after the gonads get to the inguinal ring?
cremaster muscle
What does the external abdominal oblique muscle become after the gonads get to the inguinal ring?
internal spermatic fascia
What is the processus vaginalis?
sheath of peritoneum
-run parallel to the spermatic cord; NOT WITHIN
Where does the spermatic cord become the inguinal canal?
at the superficial inguinal ring
What is difference in males in females of the cremaster muscle?
the cremaster muscle only has motor innervation in males
-sensory only in females
What causes the labioscrotal swellings?
this is where the gubernaculum ends up following all of gonadal development
What does the labioscrotal swellings become in males and females?
males- scrotum
females- labial majora
Where is the deep inguinal ring?
halfway along the length of inguinal ligament and just superior to the edge
Where is the middle inguinal ring?
more medial than the deep along the lingual ligament
Where is the superficial inguinal ring?
at the bottom of the lingual ligament
What is the innermost layer of the inguinal canal?
internal spermatic fascia
What is the middle layer of the inguinal canal?
cremaster muscle
What is the outermost layer of the inguinal canal?
external spermatic fascia
Do females have inguinal canals?
no
Do females have inguinal rings?
yes, but they are smaller than in males
