Inflammation of the bowel
Autoimmune
Seen throughout the GI tract but primarily in the small intestine

Ulcerative Colitis
A
Blood in stool
Generally in younger patients
Increased risk of colon cancer
Generally localized to the anus, rectum, and sigmoid colon

Increased energy expenditure
A
When crohn’s is active the resting Energy expenditure increases
After surgical resection REE returns to normal

Enteral protein loss
A
Capillary leak of proteins through inflamed tissue
Results in decreased concentration
