Fever, Pharyngitis, Adenopathy, Malaise, Atypical Lymphocytosis
Diagnosis of Mononucleosis
Monospot Test: Heterophile antibody that agglutinates sheep erythrocytes
Treatment of Mononucleosis
Supportive care, hydration, throat lozenges
Corticosteroids for breathing issues caused by edema
Avoid contact sports 3-4 weeks
Complications of Mononucleosis
Splenomegaly, Hepatomegaly, Jaundice, Splenic Rupture, Splenic Infarction
What ages is Mononucleosis common in?
10-19 year olds, college students, no one over 30
Epstein Barr Virus
Human Herpes Virus 4; replicated in lymphocytes and epithelial cells of pharynx and parotid duct
Cytomegalovirus
Human Herpes Virus 5; latent in leukocytes; infects immunocompromised persons and infants
CMV induced Mononucleosis
Elevated liver enzymes
CMV and HIV
T helper cell count less than 50; skin disorders; retinitis
*Take anti-CMV agents
CMV and Kidney Transplats
Fever, Leukopenia, Atypical Lymphocytes, Hepatomegaly
