Infection of foetal membranes
Medical emergency
What is a risk factor for chorioamnionitis?
PPROM
What is the presentation of chorioamnionitis?
Maternal fever + 2 of
- uterine tenderness
- foul odour o amniotic fluid
- Maternal leukocytosis
- Maternal tachycardia
- foetal tachycardia
What is the management of chorioamnionitis?
IV antibiotics
Prompt delivery
What are the complications of chorioamnionitis?
Preterm
Cerebral palsy
What is the management of exposure to VZV in pregnancy?
Maternal chickenpox history
-any doubt –> maternal varicella antibodies
Not immune –> VZ immunoglobulin up to 10 days post exposure
What is the management of chickenpox in pregnancy?
Oral acyclovir in 24 hours
What is foetal varicella syndrome?
Risk with exposure before 20 weeks
Causes limb hypoplasia, microcephaly, learning difficulties, and eye defects
When is there a risk for congenital rubella syndrome?
Exposure in first 16 weeks, esp first 10
What can congenital rubella syndrome cause?
Sensorineural deafness Cataracts Heart disease Hepatosplenomegaly Growth retardation Cerebral palsy
