- plenteful rivers w/ch provided waterpower
- many ports for trading goods
- cities grew up around mills/factories
- mills were built by rivers (factories too)
- rocky soil = can’t farm

- built 1st cotton textile mill in the U.S

- Built Lowell textile factory in Lowell Mass.
- Instituted the factory system
Define factory system:
all manufactoring steps were in one place to increase efficiency
What is the cotton gin?
easily removed seeds from picked cotton = increase of cotton production
What are interchangeable parts?
replacing old parts with new identical parts which made things easier and faster or more efficient

- U.S capitalist economic system which helped expand industrial growth
