What is Stress Incontinence?
Involuntary leakage of urine secondary to some form of exertion/physical stress:
- Coughing
- Sneezing
- Exertion
What can cause Stress Incontinence?
- Postpartum
- Pelvic Floor Muscle Weakness
What is Urge Incontinence?
Involuntary contraction of the detrusor muscle with a strong desire to void (urgency)
spastic detrusor
What can cause Urge Incontinence?
- Infections
- UMN Lesions
- Parkinson’s Disease (Rigidity)
What is Overflow Incontinence?
Incontinence secondary to an acontractile or under-active detrusor muscle.
Bladder overdistended, cannot completely empty, urine dribbles or leaks out.
What is Functional Incontinence?
Incontinence secondary to mobility, dexterity, cognitive deficits.
What can cause Functional Incontinence?
- Dementia
- Lower Extremity Weakness
Cases where a patient just cannot get to the bathroom in time.
Treatment for: Stress Incontinence
Strengthen pelvic floor muscles
Treatment for: Urge Incontinence
- Treat infections
- Make a voiding schedule; timing of how much/when to drink and when to void.
Treatment for: Functional Incontinence
- Clear clutter
- improve accessibility
- Cues/Prompt Voiding
- Strengthen LE’s
Treatment for: Overflow Incontinence
- Promote “double voiding”
- Medications, catheterization
