Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS) Flashcards
1
Q
What is CRPS?
A
Usually found in an extremity that has undergone some form of trauma.
- Due to disturbance in function of the sympathetic nervous system
2
Q
What does an increase in sympathetic activity cause?
A
Release of norepinephrine in the periphery.
- Causing vasoconstriction of the blood vessels.
- Leads to increase in pain and sensitivity.
3
Q
Predisposing factors for the developments of CRPS?
A
Trauma
Surgery
CVA - TBI
LMN and Peripheral Nerve Injuries
4
Q
Are males or females more likely to produce CRPS?
A
Females
5
Q
Clinical Presentation: Common subjective complaints
A
- Intense burning and chronic pain in the affected extremity
- Degree of pain is greater than expected to the level of trauma the tissue sustained.
6
Q
Skin changes associated with CRPS?
A
Edema
Thermal Changes
Discoloration
Stiffness
Dryness
Trophic Changes
7
Q
What laboratory or imaging studies can be implemented?
A
- X-Rays
- Thermographic Studies
- Bone scan
8
Q
Long-term effects of CRPS?
A
- Can spontaneously resolve
- Can go for years with ongoing symptoms
- Follow a pattern of remission and recurring symptoms
