Improving Stress Flashcards
What was the aim of Michenbaum?
Compare SIT with standard behaviour systematic desensitisation and a control group on a waiting list
What was the method used in Michenbaum?
Field experiment, assessed before and after treatment
Self report and grade average used
Who were the pps in Michenbaum?
21 students ages 17-25 who responded.
What was the design used in Michenbaum?
Matched pairs design, randomly allocated to either SIT therapy, waiting list group or standardised desensitisation group
Matched on gender and anxiety levels.
What was the procedure in Michenbaum?
Each pp tested via Q then allocated to group.
SIT- receiver 8 sessions, given insight approach prior to test to help gather thoughts. Given pos statement Said+ relaxation method to use in test.
System- 8 sessions, progressive relaxation training, encouraged to practise at home.
Control-told on waiting list, receive therapy in future
What were the results in Michenbaum?
Performance in tests improved in SIT compared to other 2
Significant difference between 2therapy and control
SIT showed more improvement in anxiety levels
Both therapy groups higher than control
What was the conclusion in Michenbaum?
SIT more effective was to reduce anxiety in students, prone to tests.
More effective than behavioural such as systematic as it adds a cognitive component.
What was the aim in Budzyski?
See whether biofeedback is an effective method of reducing tension headaches.
What was the method in Budzyski?
Experimental method, patients trained in a lab
Who were the pps in Budzyski?
18 pps who replied to an advertisement in local paper in Colorado
What was the design used in Budzyski?
Independent measures, pps randomly allocated to 1 of 3 groups.
What was the procedure for Budzyski?
For 2 weeks, patients kept record of headaches.
A+B had 16 sessions, 2 a week for 8 weeks
Group A- taught relaxation, slower clicks of biofeedback machine= less tension, vise versa
Group B- told concentrate on varying clicks, given pseudo feedback.
Group C- no training, told start it in 2 months.
What were the results in Budzyski?
After 3 months, A’s muscle tension significantly lower than B’s
A’s reported headaches dropped significantly, significantly lower than B+C
Drug use in A lower than B
What was the conclusion from Budzyski?
. Biofeedback effective training for patients to relax and reduce tension headaches, effective method of stress management.
. Relaxation training more effective than just being monitored, but better when with biofeedback
What was the aim of Waxler-Morrison?
See how social relationships influences response to breast cancer survival
