Describe phobias and what are their effects?
Have a definite, persistent fear of a particular object or situation. They provoke immediate response.
Person could get short breath, palpitations.
Even though we know it’s irrational, we can’t control the terror.
How is it that people may be diagnosed with a phobia?
People only diagnosed if it disrupts day to day life.
What characteristics come under the DSM for phobias?
. Marked and persistent fear that’s an excessive or unreasonable
. Phobia disrupts persons normal life

. Person recognises fear as excessive
. Exposure to phobia stimulus provokes immediate response

. The phobias situation avoided whenever possible
. Anxiety restricted to the presence of particular phobic object or situation.
. Psychological or autonomic symptoms must be primary manifestation of anxiety, not secondary to other symptoms such as delusions
What are positive symptoms in schizophrenia?

. Losing emotional response

- means there is a loss of absence of normal characteristics
