what is impetigo
Staph aureus infection on face and hands
starts as vesicular, but spread rapidly
classically golden crust around mouth and nose in children
can also be bullous impetigo-neonates calssicaly
golden bullae, spread fast and can burst especially on legs but not too extensive
think of differentials- for blistering conditions (pemphigoid, pemphigus, Herpes, Varicella, Erythema multiforme)
can also look viral-cluster of vesciles, ulcers etc
treatment of impetigo
None sometimes
but topical Abx
Or oral Abx–
flucloxacillin
also MRSA eradication treatment-
what is paediatric impetigo?
similar to normal impetigo-actually children are the most common population of impetigo
many presentation-classic is golden crust on nose -honey coloured, heals without scarring
but also bullous/blistering form
Staphylococcal scalded skin syndrome-removal on top layers of the dermis-pain full and severe
pt very unwell
NO mucosal involvement
and affects flexures
Complication of impetigo
Always remember about post strep Glomerulonephritis, about 18-21 days after -Check U&E
