what is Acne Rocasea
Chronic disorder of the skin-characterized with redness, flushing, prominant telangtasias on the face, facial erythema, papules and pustules, roughened skin
can ressemble acne
particulaly affects convexities of the central face
reccurent and remission
Aetiology and risk factors of Acne Rocasea
Underlying cause is unknown-
but has known triggers -climate exposure, vasculature, chemical and ingested agents and inflammation
climate-sunlight, increased temp
can be exarcebated by hot drinks or baths
seems to be an element of vasodilateion of the
risk factors-
Fair skin
Hot bath/shower/drinks
temp extremes and sunlight
Emotional time
alcohol, medicine, food
Epidiemology of Acne Rocasea
fair skinned celtic people and northern europeans most commonly affected but can be any
Women > men
rare in black people
very common condition-around 5% of US population
Signs and Sx of Acne Rocasea
mainly happens on convex forms of central face
Flushing sensation
Erythema, papules and pustules
Telegectasias
can be described as burning/stinging, dry, oedema
plaque formation in more advanced disease
Phymatous nose (known as whiskey nos)-sebaceous gland hyper plasia-often end stage disease
can also have ~feeling of foreign body in eye (caused by telegantasia in lid margin)
Investigations of Acne Rocasea
Clinical diagnosis
Biopsy can be used-granulomatous disease-only performed to exclude other more ominous disease (sarcoid, SLE, mastocytosis)
ANA test-to exclude SLE or other Skin manifestation of Rheum disease
Treatment of Acne Rosacea
Mainly avoid triggers once theyve been identified
but very hard to treat and remove–ususally a condition for life
initial mild disease-topical metrodinazole (not as Abx but anti inflam properties)
More severe-oral tetracycline (doxycycline)
can be combined with topical/oral anti-inflam
Creams can help with clearance of papules and pustules-azelaic acud
Prognosis of Acne Rosacea
Not an issue-most people not even aware its a condition and treatment is rarely issued
treatment most of the time works with people with mild Sx
but it doesnt have to be treated -just cosmetic and if the patient wants it gone
