Impacts On The Enviroment Flashcards
What are abiotic factors?
Non-living- pH, temperature, light intensity, soil moisture content
What are biotic factors?
Living- predation, disease, grazing
What is intraspecific competition?
Individuals of the same species requiring similar sources
What is interspecific competition?
Individuals of different species requiring the same resources
What does fertilisers and pesticides result in?
Eutrophication
What happens to pesticides as they go up a food chain?
They accumulate
What do indicator species do?
Show how high or low a standard of quality of environment areas are by their presence or absence
What are alternatives to fertilisers and pesticides?
GM crops and biological controls
Sum up eutrophication.
Fertilisers wash into lake/river
Algae grows quicker= plants shaded, algae and plants die
Dead algae and plants decomposed by microbes
Microbes respire and use up oxygen
Oxygen levels fall
Aquatic animals die= decrease in biodiversity
