Impacts on Recipient Country- Lebanon Flashcards
Negative- Lebanese Education
Many Syrian children have missed out on school for a long time and are struggling to catch up. But the Lebanese children feel left out because of the attention teachers give to the Syrian children.
Negative- Lack of Teachers
Pressure is put on education as there are not enough teachers. For example some schools send Lebanese children home after half a day and then teach Syrians in the second half.
Negative- Housing
Housing is put under pressure as there is not enough to accommodate all of the newcomers. This can lead to tension as for example Syrians share housing with many people, and so can afford rents that Lebanese cannot.
Negative- Disease
Diseases such as cholera spread easily as many people are living in substandard accommodation in refugee camps. There is a lack of quality healthcare to deal with medical issues such as these.
Negative- Racial Tension
The language and cultural differences can lead to racial tension and therefore ethnic groups tending not to integrate well into society, for example many Lebanese people are resentful of the Syrian workforce as it has resulted in more unemployment for local people.
Negative- Overcrowding
Some towns in the Bekka Valley in Lebanon reported a 100% population increase between 2013 and 2015.
Negative- Pressure on Local Resources
This puts pressure on local resources such as housing, healthcare, water, etc. Has led to epidemics like scabies during the hot summer months
Negative- Food
There is an increased demand for food without an increased supply of food, therefore food prices will rise and people could struggle to afford it which may lead to famine.
