Consequences of a Rapidly Growing Population Flashcards
Stretching of resources
Due to a population explosion, there will be pressure on essential resources, food, water and energy.
Crop output
Pressure on farmers to produce enough food for everyone which means that land is farmed intensively which results in poorer soil and lower crop output.
Schools
Pressure/overcrowding of schools - it will be necessary to build more schools and train more teachers
Healthcare
Pressure on healthcare – investment will be needed in order to meet the demand on hospital beds, medication and vaccines.
Housing
Housing in many developing countries, is already overcrowded. This problem is likely to continue, with many people being forced to live in shanty town housing
Disease
Disease spreads more easily as people are forced to live closer to each other in cramped conditions.
Employment
An increase in the economically active age group could also result in higher levels of unemployment or underemployment
Multinational Companies
There will be a much larger potential workforce which may attract multinational companies to the country
Public Transport
Public transport struggles to cope with the increased burden and traffic congestion becomes more of a problem.
