Lack of contraception and family planning which results in many unwanted pregnancies

Children are needed to work in family businesses such as farms because families cannot afford to pay workers

Children are required to look after elders of the family due to lack of pensions/ social care

High infant mortality rates, lack of medical care/ food/ decent living conditions, mean parents have more children (insurance babies) in the hope that some survive.

Having a large family increases a man’s status in some societies.

Lack of education for girls which leads to fewer job prospects, women are married off for security and the chances of having a large family are far higher if people marry at a younger age.

Lack of medical care leads to people dying from treatable diseases

Lack of clean drinking water can lead to massive dehydration and diseases such as cholera

Sanitation is poor so disease spreads easily

Infectious diseases such as HIV/AIDS and malaria are more prominent in developing countries

Famine and malnutrition are common due to natural disasters destroying crops
